Dynamite Entertainment has announced a prequel comic series to Frank Frazetta and Ralph Bakshi’s film Fire and Ice, to be written by Fables creator Bill Willingham with art by Leonardo Manco.  The series, also titled Fire and Ice, will launch in August 2023 with covers by Bill Sienkiewicz, Joseph Michael Linsner, Mahmud Asrar, and Francesco Francavilla, as well as Manco, and another cover will feature Frank Frazetta’s original painting for the movie’s poster.  The new series coincides with the 40th anniversary of the film, which was released in 1983.

The original Fire and Ice movie was developed from the art of Frank Frazetta and animated by Ralph Bakshi.  The script was written by Roy Thomas and Gerry Conway, who had both written Conan the Barbarian comics for Marvel.

The prequel series will depict the lives of the main characters, Princess Teegra and the young warrior Larn, before the events that brought them together in the movie.  The story in the comics will stand on its own, so it will be accessible to new readers, but will also fit seamlessly with the timeline of the film.

Dynamite announced last year that it had secured the rights to develop comics and a tabletop game based on the film (see “Dynamite to Develop Comics and Game Based on Frazetta and Bakshi’s ‘Fire and Ice’”), and it is working with the families of both creators on the project.
