With an absolutely BEAUTIFUL book insert. Just Checked it out – Unbelievable… FOX did a fantastic job!
From FOX :”In honor of the 35th Anniversary of the theatrical release of Wizards, we are planning to release this film on Blu-ray for the first time as a 35th Anniversary Edition on February 7, 2012. The Blu-ray packaging will include a 24-page book consisting of approved artwork images pulled from our archives plus written background on the film and its characters.

As an edition to all the amazing artwork we want to showcase in the book packaging we would love to include an introductory page written and signed by you as a note to your dedicated fans. And if possible, include some additional never-before-seen artwork or sketches that we can include in the book to enhance the collectability of the Blu-ray release.

We will keep you posted….

Nobody lives in North Beach anymore. We learned that last night. We heard a Haight-Ashbury hippie tell it authoritatively to a songwriting New Yorker who’d just driven across the country, spinning lyrics in Kansas cornfields and penciling them on scraps of newspaper during late-night bus rides.

We learned a lot last night, as legendary animator Ralph Bakshi held court in the storefront clubhouse that is Tikva Records in San Francisco’s Outer Mission, on the third night of extensive December events being held there. The event was titled “The Jewish Roots of Ralph Bakshi,” and it featured the man himself, along with one of his oldest friends, the poet Melvin Wilk, and writer/scholar Richard Simon, who served as moderator.

But before Bakshi, Wilk, and Simon even took the stage, we were treated to an opening sequence of Fritz the Cat (1972), in……”

Dear friends,I’ll be “in conversation” with animation legend Ralph Bakshi and his old friend from the neighborhood, poet Melvin Wilk, this Saturday, December 3, at the Tikva Pop-Up Jewish Record Store in the outer Mission in San Francisco.Sponsored by the Idelsohn Society, the discussion will focus on the roots of Bakshi’s work in his Jewish upbringing in Brownsville, Brooklyn, and will feature an unprecedented poetry reading by Bakshi and Wilk … as well as opportunities to ask questions in an intimate venue. First, at 7pm, we’ll show Bakshi’s American Pop, about a Jewish immigrant family’s quest for musical glory in America. Discussion, poetry, and Q and A will follow.

It’s free — with a donation requested — but it’s a really small venue (a storefront!) so reserve tickets early.

The Tikva Record Store runs the month of December in the Outer Mission, where Mission meets Valencia at the foot of Bernal, by the Argus. It’s “The First Pop-Up Jewish Record Store in the World” — and will feature live bands, lectures, films, comedy, food trucks — and, of course, lots of rare Yiddish vinyl …

This should be pretty cool, folks.

Filmmaker Ralph Bakshi, best known for his films FRITZ THE CAT and WIZARDS, is making a rare San Francisco appearance to show his classic film American Pop and discuss, with longtime friend/poet Melvin Wilk, his Jewish upbringing and the influence it had on his art. The conversation will be led by writer/scholar Richard Simon.
