I'm desperate to find someone else who likes this guy, so if you've got any thoughts on him, post 'em here. I'll occasionally update it when I have something more to blather about.
Firstly, my list of his films, from best to least awesome.
1. Eraserhead
2. The Elephant Man
3. Lost Highway
4. Mulholland Dr.
5. Blue Velvet
6. Dune
7. The Straight Story
For those uninitiated with David Lynch, I'd recommend watching those in reverse order.
I have a question: is the price for davidlynch.com worth it? It seems like there's tons of stuff on there, but I'd rather pay ten bucks a month for something I know'll be good. |

Hey, you are definitely not alone in enjoying Lynch's work. He is a unique cat and his work is very cool. It consistently makes the audience work and that in itself is the payoff. I dig that. I know some folks who work(ed) with him and they are all still in awe of his vision and very protective of his artistry. That is really refreshing. So many folks get jaded after a bit, but these guys are still amazed. And rightly so.
My ordering...
1. Twin Peaks (the show)
2. Mulholland Drive
3. The Straight Story
4. Elephant Man
5. Blue Velvet
6. Wild at Heart
7. Eraserhead
8. Fire walk with me
9. Lost Highway
10. Dune

There are two versions (at least) of Dune. One has "Alan Smithee" as a director. This is the alias used by directors who feel that a studio has stolen their film. This is the most commonly seen version of the film. It was removed of some of the "weirder" stuff. To satirize this, David Lynch then released a "special edition" that was very obviously padded, with apparent repeated footage and stock usage, as well as poor outtakes.
But yeah, I never really saw Dune as a "David Lynch film." |

Actually, it was the other way around - first came the series and then came the movie. As by the last episode of the series we STILL didn't know who killed Laura Palmer, Lynch then went ahead and made that quirky, kooky movie to tell people what really happened. He later regreted it. He prefered it to be kept a secret. Personally, I'm glad he did it. It was an important part of Laura's life that we haven't seen and now it all makes sense. Hopefully... _________________ "-This is the voice of God!

About a year ago I was at a video store and saw the film "The Straight Story" for rental. I had seen it and loved it, so I looked at the back of the case and was more than a little startled. It's so much different than Lynch's other films! Although I like head-scratching movies, it's always reassuring to know that a director can do more than one genre of film.
I also joined davidlynch.com for just a month. It's great, especially the series "Rabbits" he's got on there. Very creepy.
I also got a copy of the short films "The Alphabet" and "The Amputee". The latter is quite odd. Well, so is the former, but I think I "got it". |

| Oh yeah, my last post on top was edited. So, yeah does anybody own the DVD I just mentioned? I own a bootleg(?) I ordered off of ebay. The Universal logo appears before the movie and the back of the cover is written in Korean. According to the guy who sold it to me, it's a region 0 DVD. It's a pretty good DVD though I'd rather own the other. |

I don't have it, but I rented it from the World's Greatest Video Store. It was kinda funny:
CRM-114: "I'm not sure if you have this film, it's pretty obscure but I've been lookin' for it for a long time, it's by David Lynch and it's called Eras--"
Store Clerk: "VHS or DVD?"
So I rented the DVD. It didn't say Universal or anything. The DVD has a picture of Henry with the baby's head on the disc, and the DVD case was oddly shaped. The transfer was excellent and it had a lengthy documentary about the making of the film.
I think it was released under a label called "Absurda." Never heard of it before.
It is available on davidlynch.com, but I just wouldn't pay forty dollars plus whatever extra charges they might require. And this is coming from me, the guy who buys Criterion discs on a regular basis... Eraserhead kicks ass, but not quite forty dollars' worth of ass. |

I just got Eraserhead on DVD (Region 0 Korean import - NOT a bootleg!), and I couldn't be more satisfied with my purchase.
(P.S.: I did not vote in the poll, as this is the only David Lynch film I have seen as of yet.) |

Twin Peaks: I origianlly watched the series on VHS a couple years after it aired. I was really into it, but heard nothing but bad things from fans and non-fans alike about Fire Walk With Me, but when I was finally done with the series, I rented the film and was totally blown away.
Fire Walk With Me is an incredible film. Amazing what Lynch could do when he wasn't restrained by TV censors. In my opinion only he and Kubrick really understand what terror is. They are the masters of atmosphere.
I think, CRM114, though, that you're not entirely correct on who Killed Laura Palmer. I guess it wasn't spelled out quite as much as it was in the film, but by the first 1/4 of season 2 we knew it was Bob possessing her Dad. I thought the series, after we found out who killed Ms. Palmer dramatically took a turn for the worse. It was still good, but it was no longer great.
I wish the so-called full 4 hour version of the film could have been released somehow. I loved all the mysteries he added to the story and quirky dead ends - particularly David Bowie's segment. The scene in the club is one of the greatest I've ever seen.
I still have to make my way through some of his other films, particularly Eraserhead. I have the special edition sitting on my shelf, and I still haven't made myself watch it yet - to be honest, I'm kinda afraid to.
