"Spicy City" (1997) Executively Produced and Directed ("Mano's Hands"/"Sex Drive") by Ralph Bakshi.
I've posted two full episodes of "Spicy City" in the "External Media Links: Video Clips" thread! Those two are "Mano's Hands" and "Sex Drive", which were the only episodes that Mr. Bakshi directed himself... The "Sex Drive" episode was also written by Bakshi's son, Preston Bakshi.
Bakshi also did the voice of Stevie, Connelly, and Goldblum:

Hi Rabbit, when you get a chance watch them, let me know! Any feedback on these clips, from anyone, is greatly appreciated!
Also, make sure you check the complete duration of the clip(s), just in case my server stalls, resulting in an incomplete download. |

thanks man! i've always wanted to see spicy city!
i had to laugh that both bakshi characters had sex scenes in different episodes. i liked most of the animation, although the style made me feel like I was watching anime.
not that i'm against this, but i was also a little surprised to see lesbian references in the sex drive episode.
mcplatinum, who directed the other episodes? do you have anymore episodes from spicy city? |

| I was lucky enough to see all the episodes of this show and I liked them all. Very slick and cool sci-fi/film noir stories with some great animation ande some interesting stories. I hope that HBO releases this show on DVD. |

Yes, I also have all the episodes, and each one of them is great in their own way! It's interesting to compare the different styles between the directors, Ralph Bakshi, John Kafka, and Ennio Torresan, Jr... Ralph's episodes, "Mano's Hands" and "Sex Drive", were the most fun by far! Ennio Torrenson, Jr's episodes, "Tears of a Clone" and "Eye for an Eye", were more dramatic and had a darker tone to them. I also liked "Love is a Download", directed by John Kafka and written by Preston Bakshi, which touched on the themes of the real world vs. the cyber world, and how a persons mind is more important than their physical appearance.
Here are all the episodes from "Spicy City"! I've made the video clips low resolution to conserve server space. They are decent quality, though. Enjoy!!

I would also like to add that Bakshi was the voice director on all of the episodes, except for "Tears of a Clone" and "Eye for an Eye".

I'm sure Bakshi did this for some laughs.
"Mano's Hands" end of Clip-2 - Stevie (Bakshi's voice) and the voodoo woman sex scene:

"Sex Drive" Clip-2 - Goldblum (Bakshi's voice) and Virus the prostitute:

This might be why...

I bet Kyoung Ja Kim has done these scenes before.

Bakshi, credited as character designer for both episodes, "Mano's Hands" and "Sex Drive"... Did any of you think that Stevie resembles Angie from "Heavy Traffic"?

| I think he looks like Dect. Mannigan. Heh, also those are Korean names if I'm not mistaken, but lots of Anime is done in Korea and outside of Japan. |

Ko Ko Entertainment and Seoul Movie were the overseas studios that produced the animation for "Spicy City". Both studios are Korean based, which have produced anime/"anime like" work, including the adult oriented "Nudle Nude 1 & 2" (Seoul Movie) and HBO's "Spawn" (Ko Ko Entertainment).

Yes, there is some great Korean anime! Probably the most popular Korean anime flick is "Wonderful Days" (aka "Sky Blue").

all I can say is
WOW.
I think I was only 18 or 17 at the time...I didn't watch TV at all...always a party kid, so I was clueless 2 what was on HBO at the time, or television in general at all...and I guess it's not hard 2 figure out why it didn't last...a risky program 4 HBO 2 air I guess...with it being animation and all. |

Did you know that Joey Camen was the voice of Max (Spicy City) and Slash (Cool World)? Here's a few sample clips of Joey's voice work from "Spicy City" (ep. "Sex Drive"):

"She's a star Otaku! You can't tell her from the real thing! Virtual Girls 2, will make America, cum in droves!":
Play .MP3!
"Fuckin' mental case!!":
Play .MP3!
"How the hell? Why don't you come inside miss, nice gazoongies you got there lady! What brings you to M&G?":
Play .MP3!
___________________________________________________________________________________
Matthew Flint also made an appearance in "Spicy City", by playing Stern in the "Sex Drive" episode. Flint also stared in Bakshi's HBO drama, "Cool and the Crazy": Here's a few sound bites of his work from "Sex Drive":

"You're late for this months installment hook!":
Play .MP3!
"One more crack like that, and I'll take you're tongue to the cleaners! Now cough it up!!":
Play .MP3!

Also, did anybody think Stern was supposed to be a cartoon character of Bakshi? (Maybe, not in personality, but in appearance)?

I'm sure you had questions about the possiblilty of a DVD collection for Spicy City before...but I thought now would be a good time to bring up a proposal I've been mulling over since I discovered this forum.
I bring it up now because HBO and Warner Bros. are planning to release a 10th anniversary edition for the Animated Version of Spawn which came out at the same time as Spicy City. I figured...if there was a better time to convice someone at HBO and/or Warner Bros. to officially release Spicy City on DVD, it's NOW.
To begin, I plan to check out both web sites for an e-mail address or something there where one could make a request for certain series.
If there is anything else I can do...please let me know about it. |
