Dear Mr.Baskshi I was just rewatching Wizards on dvd the other day when I heard about the passing of Hunter, it took me back in time for I found both of you at about the same time in life 15. you in an old movie theatre and Mr.hunter in the back of a used book store. you both opened my mind to the possibilitys of free thought. In these Dark days of false patriotism, you and he are still safe havens for reason and sanity. I have introduced both of you to my Children in the hopes that thay to can find the humanity in your work. would you ever consider doing an animated movie based on some of his work for I think it would be very powerful
and reach alot of children and Adults that are being dumbed down bye this GARBAGE that is coming out today, to many to list. I just found this site so if I ask a stupid Question please forgive are you planning a new wizards movie and if so when do you expect it to come out. you made refference to wizards two in the dvd commentary. you Can E-mail me or put me on the e-mail list at Ioway@gci.net
Raymond Gallegos p.s. buy the ticket take the ride! |

| Interesting you should say that - Fear and Loathing in Vegas was a book I was dying to animate. Hunter had given the rights to a girlfriend of his. I spent 3 days with her trying to talk her into me animating it - she wanted to make a live action of it - I kept telling her that a live action would like like a bad cartoon but an animated version would be a great one. She had a tremendous disdain for animators because itwasn't considered the top of Hollywood. Hunter also could not make her change her mind. So she made the pic with Johnny Depp (who is a great actor) and got the film I told her she would get - It would have been more real in a cartoon using Steadman's drawings. As far as Hunter dying, I felt just as bad as when I heard Bukowski died. I am going to feel as bad when I hear that I died. What the fuck are you gonna do? |

I bought the Criterion Edition of F&L thinking it was animated (the cover had a Ralph Steadman drawing rather than the warped face DVD image) and was so excited at the prospect of HST's masterwork being a cartoon that I ran through a red light on the way home. When I watched the movie, I was hugely disappointed, but grew to like it on the second viewing. But this news... is just... well, let's just say I was cleaning coffee off the screen and keyboard. Mr. Bakshi, you have always reminded me of Terry Gilliam in a way; working with minimal budget, crew, and resources, and often under time constraints, but always producing something completely original and extremely entertaining and slightly detached from reality. I hope that Coney Island is going to be as engaging and quirky as your other films. Good luck! |

I have to agree, I think a Bakshi animated F&L would blow Gilliam's out of the water. Out of all the Gilliam movies I've seen, I liked that one the least. It just didn't work for me. The only standout points were BIG SURPRISE the animated sequences. If he had done the whole film like that, it would have been a masterpiece! But it was still good compared to most of the crap out there, it *was* Gilliam after all.
As for Ralph dying, no way man, that is never going to happen. He's got at least 20 features left in him, man. We need to think about getting this guy in the icebox with Walt! |

I like Terry Gilliam, but Fear and Loathing didn't really do it for me.Depp was good, but the the film was just so-so in my opinion.
It's weird though because when I first read FILILV I actually thought it would make a pretty awesome and twisted cartoon. |
