Hello Mr. Bakshi.
I'm new here at this forum, so before I ask my question I would like to say hello to you and everyone here at this forum. Plus, also let you know how much I admire your work as an animator. You taught me that animation was not a genre, but a forum. A medium where any kind of story (Whether it be aimed at children, adults or both) can be told. That there is so much more that can be done with it than most people think. That it doesn't have to be just entertainment for children, but entertainment for everyone. Children and adults alike. Thank you for showing me that cartoons aren't just for kids.
Now, on to my question. I heard once on animationnation.com that you and John K. had gotten together and were doing some kind of film. I forget the title though (Was it called Billy's Girl?) I was just wondering if you two were still working on it. _________________ "Why does a great actor like James Earl Jones always have to play black men?"

It was called Bobby's Girl. Here is a piece of early development artwork:
The project never came into fruition for some reason (Ralph will have to explain this later on -- I don't have a friggin' clue), and both John and Ralph have stated that they find it unlikely that this will ever get off the ground. |

John and a bunch of guys were working for me in my studio on storyboards before Mighty Mouse. Bobby's Girl was the project, Tri-star bought the movie. John and a bunch of other artists designed it (the same guys who went to work on Mighty Mouse) I was the producer/director. The studio would then have sequence directors, designers etc. as usual. The president of tri-star- Jeff Siganski, got fired. The project was cancelled by tri-star. In panic I sold Mighty Mouse and decided to make John a director to train him on a tv series. Roughly speaking, after that, John really wanted his own studio to produce and direct himself and never really felt comfortabl working for anyone else. Even his giant friend Ralph.
We still both respect each other a lot but business and ownership and all the boring things that make up agents contracts kept getting in th way of doing any more movies. Its really no ones fault, just Hollywood. John and I are both very different in subject and content - because I'm the mature one -
I am now started with what could be my last feature called Last Days at Coney Island which I have designed, written and directed. I've hired 2 animators - more about them later - and have recorded the first 10 minutes. It's extremely strange - even for me. Hopefully I can finish this - it's extremely low budget which allows me the freedom I want. It's only in low budget that the big shots don't care what you're doing. Low budget does not mean bad film. It forces you to make the film very direct. Bobby's Girl would have been great in its day. Especially before Mighty Mouse. ( And that's by the humor) Now it's all different -

So, no Wizards II?
I really hope this is not true at all. I've been dreaming of the possibilities involving this project and reading Mr. B's post has really let me down...what a way to end the day... _________________ "-This is the voice of God!

"Last Days at Coney Island" eh?
Sounds cool. I'll look in to it. But I hope it's not your last feature. I'd hate to see you just quit. The American animation industry needs you Ralph (Especially nowadays! ) _________________ "Why does a great actor like James Earl Jones always have to play black men?"

this is the greatest fucking thing....a new film by Ralph? this is....fucking incredible...in the span of the last 2 weeks, J-L Godard's 'Tout Va Bien' (great film by the way) was released on DVD with the beautiful 'Letter To Jane', a soundclip from the new Nine Inch Nails record makes it sound like it's going to be as fucking amazing as 'The Fragile' and now Bakshi-in this time of war, fundamentalist christian values, in the midst of a capitalist society which will stop at nothing to get what it wants-is the greatest time since the 70s when he made 'Coonskin' to make a film...
Ralph, could you tell us a little bit about the film? _________________ 'The things that I invent are the only things that are real to me'-Federico Fellini
